abstract:
In this talk I will first present some views that distinguish complex systems, such as a cloud, from complicated systems, such as a computer. After a brief discussion of phase transitions and critical phenomena, I will outline how key concepts in non-equilibrium critical systems can provide a conceptual framework to understand many properties of complex systems. I will end by discussing the critical brain hypothesis, which has gained much theoretical and experimental support over the past decade.
