Abstract:
A reason that we never observe the violation of the second law of thermodynamics in our everyday life lies, in part, in an emergent property came out of a huge number of degrees of freedom of order Avogadro’s number. That’s why e.g., a resistance never injects energy back into an electric circuit. In small systems in turn, statistical fluctuations are dominant and play a crucial role to describe the statistical behavior of the systems far from equilibrium. In this talk, after a fast review of the non-equilibrium thermodynamics, we will show an example in which the second law can be violated, and this violation interestingly provides some useful equilibrium-like information for an out of equilibrium system.
